Lutron LED+ PRO dimmer

After speaking to several installers experiencing issues on site, I feel the need to reiterate some important points from my previous LED+ tech tip about phase selection, as well as add some clarification.

The majority of the time, you’ll be using a neutral. The default phase selection with neutral connected is reverse phase. However, many loads these days, including some modern dimmable LEDs, are forward or reverse phase. Sometimes forward phase only. In fact, Lutron Hi-Lume LED drivers are forward phase, necessitating a phase selection change.

How do you know the phase is wrong? You’ll see the dimmer shut off and blink an LED indicator error code instead. Or, ideally, you were provided the specifications of the loads you’re dimming, and can set the phase appropriately ahead of time.

You ultimately need to use the programming software to select the correct phase. In HomeWorks Designer, simply fill out the load schedule appropriately. In RadioRA 2 on the PC, you can change the phase in advance settings:

Then you can select the phase:

After activation, and during every subsequent full database transfer, the programming software will set the dimmer’s phase selection.

With RA2 Select, phase selection is done in the app. After activation, tap the device from the main screen, then Edit Device, then phase selection is an option under Advanced.

Now, what if you need to change the phase before activation, such as a partially completed project, to pass electrical inspection, or test LED compatibility? Use the manual button-press phase selection in the instructions and in my original email below. Note: when you come back later to activate and transfer, RadioRA 2 and HomeWorks software will override the manual button-press selection with whatever load type or phase the software was programmed to control. Manual button-press phase selection is not considered a homeowner edit for synchronization.

The LED+ PRO dimmer certainly makes design, pricing, stocking, distribution, etc. easier. Just one part# can dim with the widest compatibility. But it doesn’t eliminate the need to know what type of load you’re controlling and program for its phase. Compatibility is contingent on proper phase selection.
